Dusting this journal off with my little broom because it's [community profile] thefridayfive time.

5. Name five favorite movies.

I've been seeing a lot of clips on Instagram of people being asked by representatives from Letterboxd to share their four faves. These people get tripped up and say that it's impossible to pick just four and to an extent I get that but also I know what my top four movies are! It's the fifth that gets spicy!

Ordinary People is my #1. It's got everything I love. Conversations. Grief. Trauma. Characters so complicated it twists your gut a new way each time. Timothy Hutton. I love it to death. This movie is in my soul.

Klute is another favorite. The perfect character study, the perfect thriller. It's sexy, it's scary, it's sad, it's bruised, it's hopeful. I could watch its push and pull over and over and over again.

Super 8 is just like, I guess you'd call it my Comfort Movie. It's maybe not the best movie of all time but there are so many special things about it, To Me. It captures a feeling I could spend my whole life trying to articulate.

Reds is a recent addition to my top 4 but I think it's like the best of the cinematic epics I've seen. And yet despite its scope it's so real and relatable. I was a bit shocked, the first time I saw it, by just how much! Like oh god yeah the struggle has gone on for generations and it will go on without us and we will fail but we are just one piece of it.

And, okay. Spot number five... this evening I'll give it to Do the Right Thing. That was the first piece of cinema that really radicalized me. I think it is in many ways the perfect film. Seeing all the props and script copies at the Spike Lee exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in December 2023 had me bawling in public.

4. Name four areas of interest you became interested in after you were done with your formal education.

Pottery, gardening, poetry, and Marxism. Yes... I know... I use they/them.

3. Name three things you would change about this world.

That's a lot of responsibility... do away with money—end all hunger—comfort and shelter for everyone.

2. Name two of your favorite childhood toys.

My Barbies, with whom I loved to play Barbie Murder Mystery Courtroom Drama, and my baby blanket, Lankie.

1. Name one person you could be handcuffed to for a full day.

I guess Lily because she would want to take a three-hour nap at some point which means I could get three hours to just chill. And also because I never get to a point where I'm like "I think I'm done hanging out with Lily." That simply doesn't happen.

Reading: Just finished Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney. Some parts of it were a little much but Rooney's sincerity is so like, powerful and hard and vicious that I can't hold it against her. The book did make me break down crying numerous times. I just love, love, love how her writing sneaks up on me. I'll just be vibing along like "hm things sure are happening" and then suddenly I'm like "perhaps my pain is not unique and that is not something to grieve but something to celebrate."

Listening: Petey USA's album is so good, OMFG!!! Listen to The Yips! My favorites are "Breathing the Same Air," "Ask Someone Else," "The Milkman," and "Stereoscope."

Watching: I picked up SVU again because it's a symptom of my mental health being not so good. July is always really hard. I'm on season 8 now. I can't remember the last time I paid attention. Nonetheless my Stabler/Huang BL theory is getting only more juice with each passing day.
