27. Here comes the really scary part
Nov. 1st, 2024 11:14 amIt's
thefridayfive time again! They've got you running through the night!
1. Do you celebrate or observe Halloween? How?
Yes! It has gotten to be a more casual celebration as the years have gone on, but I love having a small group of friends over and watching a scary movie or two. This year I made some beef stew and invited some people over, and everyone had to create a shitty Google Slides presentation on which movie they thought we should watch and why, and then we all voted. We watched Van Helsing (2004), a crowd-pleaser, a relic from my junior high era.
2. What is your favorite Halloween candy?
Mini Kit-Kats feels like it's cheating because Kit-Kats are my favorite candy just generally.
3. Do you get trick-or-treaters on Halloween?
Nope! In our old neighborhood we did get some, but I haven't lived in a trick-or-treating hotspot in several years. In my hometown, I lived in a neighborhood where trick-or-treating was such a big deal that the city closed all the roads. It was wonderful.
4. Do you enjoy dressing up in costumes?
The Leo in me loves rolling up in an eye-grabbing costume, but the everything else in me simply does not have the foresight to prepare one most of the time.
5. What is your favorite Halloween memory?
When I was six, my dad took me out trick-or-treating; it was just the two of us. As I approached the front door of a particular house, I passed by what looked to my child eyes like a dummy, face-down on the ground next to the stairs. I got my candy and turned to go, and suddenly the dummy leaped up and went "AAAAH!" I also went "AAAAH!" and, sobbing hysterically and terrified beyond measure, ran for my life for several blocks (or maybe it was just one block, idk, I was six). My dad was beside himself chasing me down, but he eventually caught up with me at a house belonging to an older couple that had noticed my distress. I was so certain my dad would be angry at me for running away, but he swept me up in his arms and told me everything was okay, and he carried me back down the street and all the way to the scary house and literally made the guy get up and come and apologize to me. I really strongly remember what it felt like to have a grown adult with so much more power than I had show me genuine remorse for scaring me and apologize respectfully. My dad asked me if I wanted to go home after all of the excitement but I decided I wanted to be brave and keep trick-or-treating, so we did. Formative experience!
